Vigil provides a simple and reliable monitoring and notification service for your web-based Heroku application or endpoint.
All of the domains attached to your application (including custom domains) will be monitored by Vigil.
Provisioning the add-on
Vigil will begin automatically monitoring your application domains once the add-on has been added to it.
Attach Vigil to a Heroku application via the CLI:
A list of all plans available can be found here.
$ heroku addons:create vigil -----> Adding vigil to sharp-mountain-4005... done, v18
Once Vigil has been added for your application, a VIGIL_AUTO_ADD_DOMAINS configuration variable will be set. It is a boolean value. The default value is 1 which means add new domains automatically. When it is set to 0, it means don’t automatically add domains.
The configuration variable VIGIL_AUTO_ADD_DOMAINS can be confirmed using the
heroku config:get command.
$ heroku config:get VIGIL_AUTO_ADD_DOMAINS 1
Configuring which URLs Vigil will monitor
Automatically sync Heroku application domains
After adding Vigil, your Heroku application domains (including custom domains) will be automatically configured for monitoring. You can disable this behavior by changing the value of the VIGIL_AUTO_ADD_DOMAINS to “0”.
$ heroku config:set VIGIL_AUTO_ADD_DOMAINS=0 Setting config vars and restarting sharp-mountain-4005... done, v5 VIGIL_AUTO_ADD_DOMAINS: 0
Changing the URL being monitored
Vigil can be configured to monitor a specific path, different HTTP method (POST, PUT, GET), or different protocol such as HTTPS. To change the URL or change any of the other available configuration options, visit the Vigil web client.
The Vigil dashboard can be accessed via the CLI:
$ heroku addons:open vigil Opening vigil for sharp-mountain-4005
or by visiting the Heroku Dashboard and selecting the your Heroku application where you have the Vigil Add-on installed. Select ‘Vigil Monitoring Service’ from the Add-ons menu.
Migrating between plans
heroku addons:upgrade command to migrate to a new plan.
$ heroku addons:upgrade vigil:basic -----> Upgrading vigil:newplan to sharp-mountain-4005... done, v18 ($4.99/mo) Your plan has been updated to: vigil:basic
Removing the add-on
Vigil can be removed via the CLI using 'heroku addons:destroy’.
This will destroy all associated data and cannot be undone!
$ heroku addons:destroy vigil -----> Removing vigil from sharp-mountain-4005... done, v20 (free)
